Sheikh
Shihab ad-Din Abu Hafs Umar as-Suhrawardi (539-632 AH / 1145-1234 CE) was a major Sufi master, Shafi'i jurist, and the systematizer of the Suhrawardiyyah Sufi order. Born in Suhraward in the Jibal region of Persia (modern northwestern Iran), he was raised by his uncle Abu an-Najib as-Suhrawardi, also a renowned Sufi scholar and author of Adab al-Muridin, an early systematic guide for Sufi disciples.
Umar as-Suhrawardi studied in Baghdad, where he became a central figure in the scholarly and spiritual life of the Abbasid capital. He studied hadith, jurisprudence, and spiritual disciplines from the great masters of his era. The caliph al-Nasir li-Din Allah held him in high esteem and sent him on important diplomatic missions to various rulers, making him a significant figure not just in religious but also in political life.
His most important work is Awarif al-Ma'arif (The Gifts of Gnosis), a comprehensive guide to Sufi doctrine and practice that became one of the most widely read manuals of Islamic spirituality. It presents the path of spiritual development within a framework firmly rooted in the Sharia. He also authored Rashf an-Nasa'ih al-Imaniyyah and other works on spiritual and ethical topics.
As-Suhrawardi founded the Suhrawardiyyah order, which spread through Persia, Iraq, and the Indian subcontinent, becoming one of the major Sufi orders of the medieval Islamic world. The order distinguished itself by emphasizing adherence to the Sharia alongside the spiritual path, and by active engagement with society rather than withdrawal from it. He passed away in Baghdad in 632 AH. His Awarif al-Ma'arif remains a cornerstone text in Islamic spiritual literature.
