Abu Talha al-Ansari, whose full name was Zayd ibn Sahl ibn al-Aswad al-Khazraji, was one of the most prominent Companions from the Ansar of Medina. He was among the richest of the Ansar and was known for an extraordinary act of charity when the Quranic verse 'You will not attain righteousness until you spend from what you love' was revealed: he immediately donated his most beloved garden, Bayruha, to the poor — a gesture the Prophet ﷺ praised warmly. He was one of the finest archers among the Companions and at the Battle of Uhud shielded the Prophet ﷺ with his own body, losing function in his hand to protect the Prophet's face. He participated in all the major campaigns and narrated hadiths from the Prophet ﷺ on prayer, charity, and the conduct of the Muslims. He was one of those Companions of whom the Prophet ﷺ said the sound of their footsteps could be heard in Paradise. He passed away around 31–34 AH. His narrations are found in Sahih al-Bukhari and the Sunan.
