Imam
Sa'd ad-Din Mas'ud ibn Umar ibn Abdullah at-Taftazani (722-792 AH / 1322-1390 CE) was one of the most brilliant and versatile scholars of the late medieval period. Born in Taftazan (in modern Turkmenistan), he displayed exceptional intellectual gifts from a young age, reportedly completing his first major work at the age of sixteen. He studied under leading scholars of Khurasan and spent his career in various courts of Central Asia and Persia before being brought to Samarqand by Timur (Tamerlane).
At-Taftazani was a master of virtually every intellectual discipline of his era: theology (kalam), jurisprudence, hadith, Quranic commentary, rhetoric (balaghah), logic, and linguistics. His works became standard texts in madrasas across the Islamic world. His commentary on the Aqidah at-Tahawiyyah (Sharh al-Aqidah at-Tahawiyyah) provides a sophisticated Maturidi-influenced theological explanation. His Sharh al-Maqasid is a major systematic theology work. His Mukhatasar al-Ma'ani and Mutawwal are the definitive advanced texts on Arabic rhetoric that remain in use today.
His Sharh al-Aqidat an-Nasafiyyah is one of the most studied commentaries on al-Nasafi's creed statement. His Talwih is a major commentary on legal theory (usul al-fiqh). He also wrote significant works in Quranic commentary, hadith, and other fields. He engaged in famous intellectual debates with al-Jurjani on theological and rational questions.
At-Taftazani passed away in Samarqand in approximately 792 AH. His works in rhetoric, theology, and legal theory are among the most widely studied advanced academic texts in the traditional madrasa curriculum and continue to be taught across the Muslim world.
