الحسن البصري
Al-Hasan al-Basri (642-728 CE) was one of the most celebrated scholars and spiritual authorities among the Tabiin, and his influence on Islamic scholarship, theology, and spirituality was immense. Born in Medina, he was raised in the household of Umm Salamah, the Prophet's wife, and grew up surrounded by the companions.
Hasan al-Basri moved to Basra, where he became the leading scholar and preacher of his time. His sermons on the transience of worldly life, the reality of death, and the importance of sincere worship were so powerful that they moved people to tears. He was a master of Arabic eloquence, and his literary style influenced generations of writers and preachers. His circle in Basra attracted scholars from across the Muslim world.
He played a foundational role in multiple Islamic disciplines. He is counted as a key figure in the early development of Islamic theology (kalam), asceticism (zuhd), and jurisprudence. His students included figures who would shape Islamic thought for centuries. He was also notable for his courage in speaking truth to power, writing letters to the Umayyad rulers criticizing their policies. He died in Basra at the age of eighty-eight, and it was said that his funeral was attended by such a large crowd that the afternoon prayer in the main mosque was prayed without a congregation because everyone was at his funeral.
