الحسن بن علي
Hassan ibn Ali (625-670 CE) was the eldest grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, born to Fatimah az-Zahra and Ali ibn Abi Talib. The Prophet personally named him, performed the aqiqah sacrifice, and showered him with love and attention throughout his childhood. He bore a striking physical resemblance to the Prophet, and the companions noted this likeness frequently. The Prophet declared, 'Hassan and Husayn are the chiefs of the youth of the people of Paradise.'
Hassan was known for his dignity, generosity, eloquence, and forbearance. He was regarded as one of the most generous people of his time, giving away his wealth on multiple occasions and performing Hajj on foot more than twenty times despite having the means to ride. When Ali was assassinated in 40 AH (661 CE), Hassan was pledged allegiance as the fifth caliph. Recognizing that continued conflict would destroy the Muslim community, he negotiated a peace treaty with Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, ceding political authority to preserve Muslim unity.
This act of selflessness fulfilled the Prophet's prophecy: 'This son of mine is a sayyid (leader), and Allah will use him to reconcile two great groups of Muslims.' The year 41 AH became known as the Year of Unity (Am al-Jamaah). Hassan withdrew from political life and settled in Medina, devoting himself to worship and scholarship until his death in 50 AH (670 CE). He is buried in al-Baqi cemetery in Medina and is universally revered across the Muslim world for his noble character and his sacrifice for the sake of communal harmony.
