الحسين بن علي
Husain ibn Ali (626-680 CE) was the younger grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, born to Fatimah and Ali ibn Abi Talib. Like his brother Hasan, the Prophet loved him deeply and declared him one of the leaders of the youth of Paradise. He grew up in the household of the Prophet and was shaped by the example of his grandfather, parents, and brother.
After the death of Muawiyah in 60 AH (680 CE), his son Yazid claimed the caliphate. Husain refused to pledge allegiance to Yazid, considering his rule illegitimate and unjust. The people of Kufa in Iraq sent thousands of letters inviting Husain to come and lead them against Umayyad tyranny. Husain set out from Mecca with a small group of family members and supporters, but the Kufans were prevented from joining him by the Umayyad governor Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad.
Husain and his small caravan of approximately seventy-two men, women, and children were intercepted at Karbala in Iraq on the 10th of Muharram, 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE) by an army of several thousand. Despite being vastly outnumbered and cut off from water for three days, Husain refused to submit and chose to die with honor. He and most of his male companions were killed in the ensuing battle. The tragedy of Karbala became one of the most defining events in Islamic history, inspiring movements for justice across the Muslim world. Husain's stand is remembered as a supreme act of courage against oppression, and the Prophet's words about him continue to resonate: 'Husain is from me, and I am from Husain.'
