الحسين بن علي
Husayn ibn Ali (626-680 CE) was the younger grandson of the Prophet Muhammad through Fatimah az-Zahra and Ali ibn Abi Talib. The Prophet named him and loved him dearly, frequently carrying him on his shoulders and kissing him. He said, 'Husayn is from me and I am from Husayn. Allah loves whoever loves Husayn. Husayn is a grandson among grandsons.' Along with his brother Hassan, the Prophet declared them the leaders of the youth of Paradise.
Husayn grew up in the Prophet's household and witnessed the caliphates of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and his own father Ali. He was known for his deep piety, courage, and adherence to principles. After the death of Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, Husayn refused to pledge allegiance to his son Yazid, believing that Yazid's ascension violated Islamic principles of governance. The people of Kufa sent him thousands of letters pledging their support, but when Husayn traveled toward Iraq, the Kufans were suppressed by Umayyad forces and could not fulfill their promises.
On the 10th of Muharram 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE), Husayn, along with seventy-two of his family members and companions, faced an army of thousands at Karbala. After being denied access to water for three days, Husayn and his supporters were killed in a battle that shocked the Muslim world. His martyrdom became a defining moment in Islamic history, remembered annually and serving as a powerful symbol of standing for truth against tyranny. The event profoundly shaped Islamic political thought, theology, and spirituality across all Muslim traditions.
