إبليس
al-Shaytan, al-Rajim
Iblis is the jinn who was among those commanded by Allah to prostrate to Adam AS upon his creation. While the angels obeyed, Iblis refused, citing his supposed superiority — 'I am better than him; You created me from fire and created him from clay' (Surah al-Araf 7:12). His refusal was not due to ignorance but to arrogance (kibr) — a pride-driven refusal to submit to a divine command he deemed beneath him. For this, he was expelled from the mercy of Allah. Rather than repenting, Iblis asked for a respite until the Day of Judgment and declared his intention to misguide the children of Adam from every direction. Allah granted him this respite, established the test of free will for humanity, and warned Adam and his descendants that Iblis is a clear enemy. His name 'Iblis' is believed to derive from the Arabic root meaning despair or hopelessness. The Quran emphasizes that Iblis has no power to force humans to sin — his only tool is whisper and suggestion (waswasa). Allah says: 'Indeed, over My servants you have no authority' (Surah al-Hijr 15:42). On the Day of Judgment, Iblis will disavow those who followed him: 'I had no authority over you — I only invited you and you responded. So do not blame me; blame yourselves' (Surah Ibrahim 14:22). His story is a profound lesson on the destructive nature of arrogance and the danger of allowing pride to override submission to Allah.
