ابن فورك
Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn Furak (c. 330-406 AH / 941-1015 CE) was a prominent Ash'ari theologian, Shafii jurist, and Arabic linguist who played a key role in establishing Ash'ari theology in Nishapur. Born in Isfahan, he studied in Baghdad and Iraq before settling in Nishapur, where he established a major teaching institution and trained a generation of scholars in theology and jurisprudence.
Ibn Furak's most significant scholarly contribution is Mujarrad Maqalat al-Ash'ari (The Pure Doctrines of al-Ash'ari), the most comprehensive and systematic compilation of Abu al-Hasan al-Ash'ari's theological positions. This work is considered the most authoritative source for understanding al-Ash'ari's actual views, as it was compiled from direct student transmissions. He also authored Mushkil al-Hadith wa-Bayanuh (Problematic Hadith and Their Explanation), addressing narrations that appear to attribute physical characteristics to Allah, and numerous other works on theology, usul al-fiqh, and Arabic grammar.
Ibn Furak was a contemporary and colleague of Abu Ishaq al-Isfarayini, and together they made Nishapur a center of Ash'ari theological learning. He was known for his eloquence in debate and his ability to articulate complex theological positions clearly. He died in 406 AH (1015 CE), reportedly poisoned by theological opponents. His works remain important sources for the study of early Ash'ari theology and its development.
