جابر بن عتيك بن قيس الأنصاري
Jabir ibn Atik al-Ansari (died after 60 AH) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Banu Mu'awiya clan of the Ansar. He participated in the Battle of Badr and all subsequent campaigns, placing him among the elite first-generation warriors of the Muslim community. His participation at Badr gave him the status and honor that the Prophet ﷺ conferred on all who were present at that founding engagement.
He narrated several hadith from the Prophet ﷺ that are preserved in the canonical collections. Among his most notable narrations is a hadith about types of martyrdom beyond dying in battle — the Prophet ﷺ said that dying of plague, drowning, dying in childbirth, and being killed defending one's wealth or family were all forms of martyrdom. This hadith is frequently cited in discussions of Islamic concepts of death and the afterlife.
He also narrated about the Prophet's statement that the meaning of "in the way of Allah" in the context of jihad extends beyond simple fighting — that dying in other ways while serving Allah could be counted similarly. These traditions reflect the Ansari community's concern with understanding the boundaries and applications of divine recompense.
He lived to an advanced age and died well after the Prophet's era, in the early Umayyad period. His son Atik ibn Jabir continued in the tradition of Medinan scholarship. Jabir ibn Atik is one of many Ansari companions whose names are preserved primarily through the hadith collections rather than through accounts of dramatic historical events.
