Umar ibn Abi Salama, may Allah be pleased with him, was a stepson of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ through the Prophet's marriage to his mother Umm Salama. His father was Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Asad, a companion who died from wounds sustained at the Battle of Uhud. After his father's death, the Prophet ﷺ married Umm Salama, and Umar was raised in the Prophet's household, giving him direct access to the Prophet's daily conduct and practices. He is best known for a famous narration preserved in Sahih al-Bukhari describing an incident in which the Prophet ﷺ corrected his table manners as a child: the Prophet told him to say 'Bismillah,' to eat with his right hand, and to eat from what was nearest to him — a narration that is one of the most cited in Islamic etiquette. He narrated additional hadiths on the Prophet's worship and household life. His close upbringing in the prophetic household gave his narrations particular value as intimate glimpses into the Prophet's daily practice. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the four Sunan collections.
