آدم
Prophet
Adam (peace be upon him), the first human being and the first prophet of Allah, was created directly by Allah's hands from clay, a creation unlike any other. Allah says in the Quran (Surah Sad 38:75): "What prevented you from prostrating before one whom I created with My own two Hands? Are you being arrogant, or are you truly one of the exalted?" After fashioning Adam, Allah breathed His spirit into him and commanded all the angels to prostrate as a mark of honor. All obeyed except Iblis, who refused out of arrogance, claiming superiority because he was made from fire. This act of disobedience marked the beginning of Iblis's enmity toward Adam and his descendants.
Allah taught Adam the names of all things, distinguishing him from the angels with a unique cognitive capacity. Allah says (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:31-33): "And He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, 'Tell Me the names of these if you are truthful.' They said, 'Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us.'" This capacity for language and knowledge was the basis of humanity's role as Allah's vicegerent on earth.
Adam was placed in Paradise with his wife Hawwa (Eve), created from him, with permission to enjoy all its fruits except one tree. Iblis deceived them into eating from the forbidden tree by swearing falsely that it would make them immortal. When they ate and became aware of their nakedness, they turned immediately to Allah in sincere repentance: Surah Al-Araf (7:23): "Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers." Allah forgave them completely.
Their descent to earth was the fulfillment of Allah's original decree, stated at the moment of creation: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:30): "Indeed, I will make upon the earth a vicegerent." Allah chose Adam as a prophet and sent him guidance. Surah Ta Ha (20:122-123): "Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided him." On earth, Adam taught his children monotheism, the first prayers, and the foundations of moral civilization. His son Habil (Abel) was killed by his brother Qabil (Cain) in the first murder in human history, recorded in Surah Al-Maidah.
Adam is the father of all humanity and the first to be honored with prophethood. His story establishes the foundational truths of Islamic theology: the danger of arrogance (Iblis's sin), the power of sincere repentance and Allah's infinite mercy, the dignity with which Allah honored humanity from the moment of creation, and the perpetual struggle against the whisperings of Shaytan. He will stand on the Day of Judgment at the head of all humanity, as every human being is among his descendants.
