Prophet
Harun ibn Imran (Aaron, peace be upon him) is a prophet of Allah and the elder brother of Musa. He was made a prophet alongside his brother specifically to aid in the mission to Pharaoh and the liberation of the Children of Israel โ a unique case in prophetic history of two brothers commissioned together as co-messengers. Musa requested this appointment explicitly from Allah: Surah Ta Ha (20:29-32): "And appoint for me a minister from my family โ Aaron, my brother. Increase through him my strength and let him share my task." Allah granted this request and honored Harun with prophethood, saying in Surah Al-Qasas (28:35): "We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both authority."
Harun's particular gift was eloquence of speech โ he was more articulate than Musa, who had a hesitation in his speech. This made Harun the primary spokesman in many confrontations with Pharaoh, while Musa's authority as the recipient of direct divine speech provided the foundation of their joint mission. Together they stood before one of the most powerful rulers in history, delivering the message of tawhid without compromise and ultimately leading the Israelites out of Egypt.
When Musa ascended Mount Sinai for forty days to receive the Torah, he left Harun in charge of the Israelites. During this period, a man called al-Samiri fashioned a golden calf from jewelry and led many of the people to worship it. Harun tried to stop them but was overpowered and feared causing a violent split. When Musa returned and saw the people dancing around the golden calf, he seized Harun in anger. Harun explained: Surah Al-Araf (7:150): "O son of my mother, indeed the people overpowered me, and were about to kill me. So let not the enemies rejoice over me, and do not place me among the wrongdoing people." Musa accepted his explanation and prayed for forgiveness for both of them.
Allah honors Harun in Surah As-Saffat (37:114-120): "And We certainly favored Moses and Aaron. And We saved them and their people from the great affliction. And We supported them so they were the victors. And We gave them the explicit Scripture. And We guided them to the straight path. And We left for them [favorable mention] among later generations: 'Peace upon Moses and Aaron.'" The Prophet Muhammad โช met Harun in the fifth heaven during the Night Journey and described him as being praised by the angels for his noble qualities.
Harun died on Mount Hor before the Israelites entered the promised land, having fulfilled his mission completely alongside his brother. His story teaches that prophethood can be shared in brotherhood, that supporting the primary messenger is itself a form of prophetic mission, and that keeping calm and avoiding fitna (division) among believers is sometimes the wisest and most courageous act of leadership.
