Prophet
Ilyas (Elijah, peace be upon him) is a prophet of Allah sent to the Israelites of the northern kingdom of Israel during a period of catastrophic religious decline. He is generally believed to have lived in the ninth century BCE, some generations after the era of Sulayman, at a time when idol worship โ specifically the worship of Baal, the Canaanite deity โ had spread widely among the Israelites under the influence of political forces. He was sent to call his people back from this apostasy to the pure monotheism that Musa had established.
Allah says in Surah As-Saffat (37:123-126): "And indeed, Elias was among the messengers. When he said to his people, 'Will you not fear Allah? Do you call upon Baal and leave the best of creators โ Allah, your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers?'" His message was direct and uncompromising. Baal was the chief idol of the Phoenicians and Canaanites โ associated with rain, storms, and fertility โ and many Israelites had been seduced into its worship, including by influence from the royal house. Ilyas challenged the entire religious and political establishment that had promoted Baal worship.
He faced death threats from the authorities and was forced to flee into the wilderness on multiple occasions. He was alone against the combined weight of a corrupt kingdom and a compromised priesthood. Despite this, he persisted in his mission with remarkable courage, never softening the message of pure monotheism and never compromising the truth to gain safety or comfort. In Surah As-Saffat (37:127-128): "But they denied him, so they will be brought [for punishment], except the chosen servants of Allah." Only a small number of the Israelites retained their faith during his era.
Ilyas's steadfastness in confronting not just common people but the most powerful political and religious authorities of his time without compromise stands as a defining characteristic of prophetic courage. He had no army, no political support, no institutional backing โ only the truth and complete trust in Allah. This is the model of prophetic calling: confronting falsehood not when it is convenient or safe, but because the truth cannot be abandoned regardless of personal cost.
Allah says in Surah Al-Anam (6:85): "And Zechariah and John and Jesus and Elias โ and all were of the righteous." His inclusion in this honored list alongside Zakariya, Yahya, and Isa confirms his elevated rank. Surah As-Saffat (37:130) grants him eternal peace: "Peace be upon Elias." His successor Al-Yasa continued his mission among the Israelites after him.
