Prophet
Yunus ibn Matta (Jonah, peace be upon him), honored with the title Dhun-Nun (the companion of the whale) and Sahib al-Hut, is a prophet of Allah sent to the people of Nineveh, a great city in ancient Assyria in modern-day Mosul, Iraq. He called his people to the worship of Allah alone. When they persisted in rejecting his message and his frustration reached its limit, Yunus left the city before receiving explicit permission from Allah to do so โ an act of haste from an otherwise exemplary prophet, reflecting the human reality of even the greatest servants of Allah.
He boarded a ship that was caught in a violent storm. When the crew cast lots to determine who should be thrown overboard, Yunus's lot came up. He was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a great whale by Allah's command โ not by accident but by precise divine decree. Surah As-Saffat (37:142): "And the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy."
In the darkness of the whale's belly, in the darkness of the deep sea, and in the darkness of the night โ three layers of darkness โ Yunus turned to Allah with one of the most powerful supplications in the Quran. Surah Al-Anbiya (21:87-88): "And [mention] the man of the fish, when he went off in anger and thought that We would not decree [anything] upon him. And he called out within the darknesses, 'There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.' So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers." This supplication โ known as Dua Yunus โ has become one of the most recited prayers for distress in Islamic practice, used by Muslims in every era.
Allah commanded the whale to eject Yunus onto the shore. He was ill, weakened, and exposed on a bare bank. Allah caused a gourd plant (yaqtin) to grow over him for shade and nourishment while he recovered. Surah As-Saffat (37:145-148): "And We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill. And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine. And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more. And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time." Nineveh became the only city in the Quran's record to believe as a whole community and be saved from punishment after it had already been decreed โ a unique and extraordinary divine mercy.
An entire surah (Surah Yunus, chapter 10) bears his name. The Prophet Muhammad โช specifically warned believers against saying they are better than Yunus ibn Matta, affirming his elevated prophetic status. His story contains multiple lessons: the importance of patience with one's mission, the absolute power of sincere repentance from the most desperate situations, the mercy of Allah that reaches even the belly of a whale, and the remarkable truth that the repentance of an entire city can turn its fate.
