Sa'id ibn Jubayr was a prominent Tabi'i scholar of Kufa, born around 45 AH. He was of Abyssinian origin and was the mawla (freed client) of the tribe of Banu Asad. He was among the most devoted students of Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) and acquired from him a profound mastery of Quranic tafsir and Islamic law. He also narrated from Ibn Umar, Aisha, and other senior companions. Scholars of his generation regarded him as one of the most knowledgeable and reliable narrators alive, with Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal considering him among the most learned of the Tabi'in. He was also a teacher of al-Zuhri and other major scholars. His end was tragic but glorious: the tyrant al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf captured and executed him around 94–95 AH after he refused to submit to his authority or renounce his principles. His martyrdom is considered one of the great tragedies of the Tabi'i generation. His narrations appear in all the major hadith collections.
