Salamah ibn Kuhail al-Hadrami was a scholar and ascetic from Kufa who was known for his piety, his precise transmission of hadith, and his expertise in Islamic jurisprudence. He was one of the reliable scholars of Kufa whose narrations are found throughout the major hadith collections.
He narrated from a wide range of sources, including Abu Juhayfah al-Sahabi, Amr ibn Maymun al-Awdi, Said ibn Jubayr, Abdur Rahman ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i, Suwaid ibn Ghafla, and others. His broad network of teachers gave him access to traditions from multiple chains and perspectives.
Salamah was known for his straightforwardness and his refusal to engage in the kind of political maneuvering that characterized some scholars of his era. He was associated with the scholarly tradition of Kufa that emphasized precision in transmission and adherence to the Sunnah. Among those who transmitted from him were Shu'ba ibn al-Hajjaj, Sufyan al-Thawri, and al-A'mash โ three of the greatest scholars of the following generation.
His narrations appear in the Sahih of al-Bukhari and Muslim and the four Sunan. He was praised by Yahya ibn Ma'in and other critics as thiqa. He died around 121 AH in Kufa, leaving a significant legacy in the hadith sciences. Salamah ibn Kuhail al-Hadrami's legacy in Kufan hadith scholarship is secure. His refusal to compromise his scholarship for political convenience, his broad network of teachers, and the respect shown to him by the greatest scholars of the subsequent generation all testify to his stature.
