Abu Qilaba al-Jarmi, whose full name was Abdullah ibn Zayd al-Azdi, was a prominent Tabi'i hadith scholar from Basra. He narrated from Anas ibn Malik, Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, Thabit ibn al-Dahhak, and other Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and was known for his deep commitment to the Sunnah and his cautious approach to issuing legal opinions. He deliberately relocated to Syria at one point to distance himself from the political and doctrinal controversies of his time in Iraq, reflecting his principled stance on remaining neutral in civil strife. He is cited in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim for hadiths on prayer, purification, and Islamic conduct. Imam Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, himself a leading Tabi'i scholar, spoke highly of Abu Qilaba and considered him among the reliable scholars of his generation. The scholars of hadith criticism unanimously considered him thiqa (trustworthy). He passed away around 104–107 AH in Syria. His narrations are found in all the major Sunan collections.
