Ubaidullah ibn Adi ibn al-Khiyar al-Qurashi al-Nawfali was a Tabi'i scholar of Medina from the Quraysh tribe. He was born during the Prophet's ﷺ lifetime but did not receive a direct narration from him, placing him among the Tabi'in. He narrated from several of the greatest companions, including Uthman ibn Affan, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Abu Hurayra, and others, may Allah be pleased with them. He is particularly known for his narration of the story of a hypocrite during Uthman's caliphate whom the Prophet ﷺ had commanded to be killed — a narration involving a question put to Uthman and the companion Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, which illuminates an important episode in early Islamic history and legal discussions about dealing with known hypocrites. He was highly regarded by hadith scholars for his reliability, knowledge, and noble character. His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and the Sunan collections. He is considered among the most trustworthy of the Medinan Tabi'in and his narrations are cited in both hadith and fiqh literature.
