Ka'b ibn Malik al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ from the Khazraj tribe of Medina and one of the three Companions who remained behind from the Expedition of Tabuk without a valid excuse. His full account of repentance — how he and his two companions, Murarah ibn al-Rabi and Hilal ibn Umayyah, were boycotted by the Muslim community for fifty days until Allah revealed their forgiveness — is narrated at great length in Sahih al-Bukhari and is among the most detailed personal accounts preserved in the hadith literature. Ka'b was also a gifted poet who composed verse defending the Prophet ﷺ and the early Muslim community, a role the Prophet ﷺ encouraged. He participated in the Second Pledge of Aqabah and in the battles of Uhud, al-Khandaq, and many subsequent expeditions. He narrated approximately eighty hadiths on worship, the Prophet's biography, and ethical conduct. He is known for the Prophet's statement to him upon his repentance being accepted: 'This is the best day of your life since your mother gave birth to you.' He passed away in Medina around 50 AH.
