Zaid ibn Thabit al-Ansari (RA) was from the Khazraj tribe of Medina and was one of the principal scribes of the Quranic revelation. He learned to write at a young age and was brought to the Prophet ﷺ when he was about eleven years old. The Prophet ﷺ also instructed him to learn Hebrew and Syriac to assist in correspondence with Jewish and Christian communities. When the compilation of the Quran was undertaken during Abu Bakr's caliphate after the Battle of Yamama — at Umar's urging — it was Zaid who was entrusted with the monumental task of collecting all written fragments and verified oral recitations into a single codex. He later oversaw the preparation of the standardized Uthmanic mushaf during Uthman's caliphate. He narrated approximately 92 hadiths and was the foremost authority in Medina on Quranic recitation, inheritance law, and the rules of obligatory shares (fara'id). He passed away in Medina around 45–55 AH.
