Zayd ibn Wahb al-Juhani was a senior tabi'i scholar of Kufa who occupies an interesting position in Islamic history as someone who set out to meet the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, but arrived in Medina after the Prophet had already passed away. Despite this near-miss with companionship, Zayd went on to become one of the most prominent scholars of the tabi'un generation and a significant transmitter of the Kufan tradition.
His time in Medina allowed him to meet many of the senior companions immediately after the Prophet's death, and he subsequently returned to Kufa where he became a major student of the first Kufan scholars. Most importantly, he became closely associated with and transmitted extensively from the companion Ali ibn Abi Talib, who was based in Kufa during his caliphate (35โ40 AH). His close association with Ali gave his transmissions particular importance for those interested in the traditions associated with the fourth caliph.
Beyond Ali, Zayd ibn Wahb transmitted from Umar ibn al-Khattab (whom he met in Medina), from Abd Allah ibn Masud (the great Kufan companion), from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, and from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari and others. This breadth of companions places him among those tabi'un who had the widest direct contact with the senior prophetic generation.
His narrations appear in Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, and all four Sunan โ a distribution that indicates universal acceptance of his transmissions at the highest scholarly levels. He is consistently rated thiqa (trustworthy) by the rijal critics.
Beyond his role as a transmitter, Zayd ibn Wahb participated in some of the significant military events of early Islamic history, reportedly being present at some of the battles of the early Muslim community. This active engagement with the political and military life of the community was typical of many senior tabi'un who lived through the expansionist period of early Islam.
His long life โ he reportedly lived into advanced age and died around 96 AH โ meant that he served as a living bridge between the immediate post-prophetic generation and the scholars of the late first and early second Islamic centuries who were beginning to systematize the transmitted tradition. Al-Dhahabi mentions him in Siyar A'lam al-Nubala' as one of the senior and reliable figures of Kufan transmission.
