Abd al-Muttalib's Vow to Sacrifice His Son
نذر عبد المطلب ذبح ابنه
When Abd al-Muttalib had only one son, al-Harith, he vowed to Allah that if he were blessed with ten sons, he would sacrifice one of them at the Ka'bah. After being granted ten sons, he drew lots to determine which one would be sacrificed, and the lot fell on Abdullah, the Prophet's father and Abd al-Muttalib's most beloved son. The Quraysh intervened, urging him to find an alternative. A wise woman from Yathrib suggested drawing lots between Abdullah and camels, increasing the number by ten each time the lot fell on Abdullah. After the lot fell on Abdullah ten consecutive times, on the eleventh draw with one hundred camels, the lot finally fell on the camels. Abd al-Muttalib sacrificed the hundred camels, and this is why the blood money (diyah) in Islam was set at one hundred camels.
