Appearance of False Prophets in the Prophet's Lifetime

ظهور مدعي النبوة

Various (Yamama, Yemen, Najd)

In the final years of the Prophet's life, several individuals claimed prophethood across the Arabian Peninsula. The most prominent was Musaylimah ibn Habib al-Kadhdhab (the Liar) of Banu Hanifah in Yamama, who wrote to the Prophet: 'From Musaylimah, the messenger of God, to Muhammad, the messenger of God. I have been given a share of authority with you.' The Prophet replied: 'From Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, to Musaylimah the Liar. The earth belongs to Allah; He gives it as inheritance to whomever He wills among His servants.' Musaylimah attempted to produce his own 'revelations' that were widely mocked for their incoherence. Aswad al-Ansi claimed prophethood in Yemen and seized control of Sana'a, expelling the Muslim governor Mu'adh ibn Jabal. Tulayhah ibn Khuwaylid of Banu Asad also claimed prophethood in Najd. Sajah bint al-Harith of Banu Tamim also claimed prophethood and later allied with Musaylimah. All of these false prophets were defeated during the Ridda wars under Abu Bakr's caliphate.
