Revelation of Surah al-Nasr (The Help)
نزول سورة النصر
Surah al-Nasr was revealed during the Farewell Hajj or shortly before, and it was the last complete surah revealed: 'When the help of Allah has come and the victory, and you see people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, then glorify the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. Indeed, He is ever the Acceptor of repentance.' Ibn Abbas understood from this surah, through Umar's guidance, that it signaled the approaching end of the Prophet's mission and his life. Abbas explained: 'It was the announcement of the Prophet's death.' When Umar confirmed this interpretation, he said Abbas was the most knowledgeable of the companions in this regard. After this revelation, the Prophet increased in seeking forgiveness (istighfar), saying in his ruku and sujud: 'Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and all praise is due to You. O Allah, forgive me.' Aisha noticed he was saying these words more frequently and the Prophet told her: 'My Lord informed me that I will see a sign in my ummah, and when I see it, I should increase in saying: Glory to Allah and praise, and seek His forgiveness. I have now seen the sign.'
