Delegation of Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali
وفد جرير بن عبد الله البجلي
Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali came to the Prophet with a delegation from his tribe Bajilah during the Year of Delegations. He was a strikingly handsome man, and when he entered, the Prophet spread his cloak for him to sit on and said to the companions: 'When the honored man of a people comes to you, honor him.' Jarir embraced Islam and gave the bay'ah (pledge of allegiance). The Prophet then sent him to destroy Dhul-Khalasah, a temple that was called the southern Ka'bah, where the tribes of Khath'am, Bajilah, and others worshipped. Jarir led 150 riders from the Ahmas clan of Bajilah and destroyed the temple, burning it to the ground and reporting back to the Prophet. The Prophet blessed the horses of Ahmas and their men five times. Jarir later narrated important hadith about the Prophet, including the famous hadith: 'Whoever does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him.' He became a governor during the caliphate of Umar.
