The Incident at al-Raji'

حادثة الرجيع

Al-Raji', near Mecca

A delegation from the tribes of Adal and Qarah came to the Prophet claiming their people wanted to learn about Islam and requesting teachers. The Prophet sent six (or ten, according to some narrations) companions, led by Marthad ibn Abi Marthad or Asim ibn Thabit. At al-Raji', a watering place belonging to the Hudhayl tribe, the delegation betrayed them and summoned a hundred archers from Banu Lihyan. The Muslims fought until Asim ibn Thabit and several others were killed. Three survivors, Khubayb ibn Adi, Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, and Abdullah ibn Tariq, surrendered after being promised safety. Abdullah ibn Tariq was killed on the road when he tried to resist. Khubayb and Zayd were sold to the Quraysh in Mecca. Before his execution, Khubayb asked to pray two rak'ahs, establishing the tradition of the condemned prisoner's last prayer. His famous poem before death included: 'I do not care when I am killed as a Muslim, on which side I fall for the sake of Allah.'
