Revelation of the Verse of Completion of Religion at Arafat
نزول آية إكمال الدين في عرفة
On the Day of Arafah during the Farewell Hajj, while the Prophet stood at Arafat, Allah revealed the momentous verse: 'This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion' (al-Ma'idah 5:3). When Umar ibn al-Khattab heard this verse, he wept. When asked why, he said: 'Nothing comes after perfection except decline,' understanding that this signaled the approaching end of the Prophet's mission on earth. A Jewish man later told Umar: 'There is a verse you recite in your Book; had it been revealed to us Jews, we would have taken that day as a holiday.' Umar replied: 'I know on which day it was revealed. It was revealed on the Day of Arafah, on a Friday, and both are holidays for us.' This verse confirmed that the religion was complete and no further legislation would be revealed.
