Jahannam (Hellfire)
Suggest editDefinition and Reality
Jahannam (جهنم) is the abode of punishment that Allah has prepared for those who persist in disbelief, rejection of the truth, and transgression. Its existence is established by the Quran, the Sunnah, and the unanimous consensus of the Muslim ummah across all generations. Belief in Jahannam as a real, present, and permanent reality is part of belief in the Unseen (al-ghayb) and is inseparable from faith in Allah's perfect justice.
The Quran mentions Jahannam over 70 times under various names: Jahannam, al-Nar (the Fire), al-Jahim (the Blazing Fire), al-Hutamah (the Crusher), al-Sa'ir (the Blazing Flame), Saqar, al-Hawiyah (the Abyss), and al-Laza (the Blaze). Each name reflects a different aspect of its terrible reality.
Quranic Descriptions
The Quran describes Jahannam in concrete, visceral terms intended to deter the heedless and strengthen the resolve of the believers:
- 'Its fuel is people and stones' (Quran 2:24) — not ordinary wood but human beings and the idols they worshipped
- It has seven gates: 'And indeed, Jahannam is their promised place. It has seven gates, for each gate is a portion assigned' (Quran 15:43-44)
- Its drink: 'And if they call for help, they will be helped with water like murky oil that scalds the faces' (Quran 18:29); also pus and boiling water (Quran 14:16-17)
- Its food: the bitter tree of Zaqqum, whose fruit is like the heads of devils, causing agony in the belly (Quran 37:62-66)
- Its garments: 'For those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out, and boiling water will be poured over their heads' (Quran 22:19)
- Its guards: nineteen angels over it (Quran 74:30), led by the angel Malik
The Prophet said that the fire of Jahannam is 70 times hotter than worldly fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 3265). The companions said: Is not worldly fire sufficient? He replied that Jahannam is made 69 times more intense than that.
Who Enters Jahannam Eternally
Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah hold — by consensus — that those who die upon disbelief (kufr) and associate partners with Allah (shirk) without having repented will abide in Jahannam eternally, with no end and no exit: 'Indeed, those who disbelieve and die while they are disbelievers — upon them will be the curse of Allah and of the angels and the people, all together. Abiding eternally therein' (Quran 2:161-162).
The Temporary Stay of Sinful Muslims
Muslims who committed major sins (kaba'ir) but died upon the fundamental testimony of faith (shahadah) and tawhid will not remain in Jahannam forever. Allah may punish them proportionally to their deeds, then bring them out through His mercy and through the intercession of the Prophet and the believers. Not a single person who had even an atom's weight of faith in their heart will remain eternally in the Fire (Sahih al-Bukhari 22). This is the position of Ahl us-Sunnah, distinguished from both the Kharijites (who declared sinful Muslims permanent inhabitants of Hellfire) and the Murji'ah (who claimed sins had no consequence if one had faith).
Protection from the Hellfire
The Prophet said: 'Shield yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1417). He frequently sought refuge from Jahannam and taught the dua after the tashahhud: 'O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of the Hellfire, from the trials of life and death, and from the trial of the False Messiah' (Sahih Muslim 588). Consistent prayer, sincere tawbah, maintaining tawhid, giving charity, and adhering to the Sunnah are the primary safeguards.
