Belief in the punishment and bliss of the grave is an essential tenet of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah. The period between death and resurrection, known as the Barzakh, is a real experience for the soul. The Prophet (peace be upon him) sought refuge from the punishment of the grave in his prayers and taught his ummah to do the same: "Seek refuge with Allah from the punishment of the grave" (Sahih Muslim). This article examines what the Quran and authentic Sunnah teach about the soul's experience after death.

The Questioning by Munkar and Nakir

After burial, two angels named Munkar and Nakir come to the deceased and ask three questions: "Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is this man who was sent among you?" (referring to the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him). The believer answers correctly: "My Lord is Allah, my religion is Islam, and my Prophet is Muhammad." A voice then calls from heaven: "My servant has spoken the truth, so furnish his grave from Paradise, clothe him from Paradise, and open for him a gate to Paradise." The disbeliever or hypocrite, however, will stammer: "I don't know, I don't know." A voice then calls: "He has lied, so furnish his grave from the Fire, clothe him from the Fire, and open for him a gate to the Fire" (Sunan Abu Dawud, graded sahih).

Punishment of the Grave

The Prophet (peace be upon him) described several causes of punishment in the grave. He once passed by two graves and said: "They are being punished, and they are not being punished for something major. As for one of them, he used to go around spreading gossip (namimah). As for the other, he did not take care to avoid being soiled by his urine" (Sahih al-Bukhari). Other causes mentioned in hadith include: not reciting the Quran, sleeping through the obligatory prayers, consuming riba (usury), and lying. The punishment is real but occurs in a dimension that the living cannot perceive, just as a sleeping person experiences dreams that others around them cannot see.

Bliss of the Grave

For the righteous believer, the grave becomes a garden from the gardens of Paradise. The grave is expanded as far as the eye can see, it is filled with light, and the believer is shown their seat in Paradise morning and evening: "This is your place until Allah raises you on the Day of Judgment" (Sahih al-Bukhari). The believer sleeps peacefully in their grave, like a bridegroom who is only awakened by the dearest of his family. The Quran hints at this bliss: "And do not say about those who are killed in the way of Allah, 'They are dead.' Rather, they are alive, but you perceive it not" (Quran 2:154).

Protection from the Punishment of the Grave

The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught several means of protection from the punishment of the grave: seeking refuge from it in every prayer (after the final tashahhud); reciting Surah al-Mulk regularly (the Prophet said it is "the protector that saves from the punishment of the grave," Sunan al-Tirmidhi); dying as a shahid (martyr); dying on a Friday; consistent righteous action; and avoiding the sins specifically linked to grave punishment. The believer should prepare for this inevitable journey by living a life of obedience to Allah and seeking His forgiveness for shortcomings.
