Conversion of Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf

إسلام عبد الرحمن بن عوف

Mecca

Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf of Banu Zuhrah accepted Islam through Abu Bakr's invitation, becoming one of the first eight converts to Islam. Before Islam, his name was Abd Amr (or Abd al-Ka'bah according to some narrations), and the Prophet renamed him Abdur-Rahman (Servant of the Most Merciful). He was a successful merchant even before Islam and became one of the wealthiest companions. Despite his wealth, he was known for his humility and generosity, donating enormous sums for the cause of Islam. He was among the ten promised Paradise. After the Hijrah, the Prophet paired him in brotherhood with Sa'd ibn al-Rabi in Medina, and Sa'd offered to share half his wealth and one of his wives, but Abdur-Rahman declined, asking only to be shown the marketplace.
