2. لطم الخدود وشق الجيوب
It was the practice in Arabia at the time of the Prophet (r) for women in mourning to slap or scratch the cheeks of their faces and to rip their clothes. These acts were strictly forbidden as well as all similar practices which involved self punishment and the destruction of material wealth. These practices all aim at heightening the pain and sorrow accompanying death while Islaam seeks to minimize it. Ibn Mas‘ood reported that the Prophet (r) said, )) ِﺔﺎﻫِﻠِﻴﻯ ﺍﻟﹾﺠﻭﻋﺎ ﺒِﺩﻋ ﺩ ﺃَﻭﻭﺏﻴ ﺸﹶﻕﱠ ﺍﻟﹾﺠ ﺃَﻭﻭﺩ ﺍﻟﹾﺨﹸﺩﺏﺭ ﻀﻥ ﻤِﻨﱠﺎ ﻤﺱ ﻟﹶﻴ ((. “Whoever slaps his face, tears his clothes or invites (others) to an un-Islamic slogan is not of us.”40
