Imam
Jalal ad-Din Abdurrahman ibn Abi Bakr as-Suyuti (1445-1505 CE / 849-911 AH) was one of the most prolific scholars in Islamic history, born in Asyut, Upper Egypt. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised under the care of scholars and displayed extraordinary intellectual ability from childhood. He studied under over 150 teachers and claimed to have mastered every Islamic science by the age of forty, at which point he withdrew from public life to devote himself entirely to writing.
As-Suyuti's literary output is staggering, with estimates of his works ranging from 500 to over 700 titles. His most important works include al-Itqan fi Ulum al-Quran, the definitive manual of Quranic sciences; ad-Durr al-Manthur, a comprehensive tafsir based entirely on narrations from the Salaf; Tadrib ar-Rawi, an essential commentary on hadith methodology; al-Jami as-Saghir, a collection of thousands of prophetic traditions arranged alphabetically; and Tarikh al-Khulafa, a history of the Muslim caliphs. He also co-authored the famous Tafsir al-Jalalayn with his teacher Jalal ad-Din al-Mahalli.
As-Suyuti was a Shafi'i jurist who also engaged deeply with hadith, history, Arabic linguistics, and Sufism. He was known for his strong scholarly opinions and engaged in vigorous debates with contemporaries such as as-Sakhawi. In his later years, he lived in seclusion on the island of Rawda in the Nile, dedicating himself to worship and writing. He is considered a mujaddid (renewer) of his century and his works remain essential references across virtually every field of Islamic scholarship.
