tProphet Muhammad (~) said: «If anyone cuts down a tree of the desert, Allah will direct his head into Hellfire.» 350 What is meant by this hadith was clarified by Abu Dawood: "Whoever cuts a tree in the desert that travellers or cattle use for shade, without a reason, will be punished by Allah." This hadith demonstrates the importance of the preservation of the components of the environment and of safeguarding the Divine natural balance. 349 Tabari's explanation of the following verse. 350 Abu Dawood and Bayhaqi (a sound hadith). The Prophet (~) also encouraged planting in several hadiths: «Whoever plants a seedling, earns a reward whenever any human or any of Allah's creatures eats from it,» 351 and «If the Day of Resurrection comes while a seedling is in the hand of one of you, let him plant it.» 352 Islam also forbids wastefulness with plants or any kind of resource, for Allah ( ~) says in His Qur' an: ,,(AfA. ~ ·. ~ > <t >~1 rl~~ ·~ .:,, V"~r i~L"' l.. ~~ ~..r-- en :.....;1.::,../\11 •_;r-) ( .. And eat and drink but do not waste by extravagance, certainly He [Allah] does not like those who waste by extravagance) (Quran 7: 31)
