Their argument was that the benefit of that comes back to the giver of the zakih, because he no longer needs to spend on them or give anything to them, and that may be a trick to avoid giving zakih. Moreover, zakih and maintenance are two separate duties, and one cannot take the place of the other, as'with prayer and fasting. Zak& is a duty towards Allah (B), so it is an act of worship.
